Attorney General Abbott Vows to Defend Texans’ Freedom of Religion

AUSTIN – Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott released the following statement:

The very first freedom guaranteed by the Constitution is the freedom of religion. The Constitution prohibits the government from forcing religious institutions and people of faith to purchase products that conflict with their firmly held religious beliefs. After over a year of debate and litigation, the Obama Administration has finally begun to act in accordance with this fundamental constitutional principle. While the policy announced today is a step in the right direction, the Obama Administration continues to deny the protections guaranteed by the First Amendment to many American businesses built on religious principles. We will continue our efforts to defend Texans’ freedom of religion wherever it is threatened.
