Hurricane Beryl
The Acting Lt. Governor of Texas issued a disaster proclamation on July 6, 2024, and the City of Baytown’s Mayor, Brandon Capetillo, issued a declaration of disaster on July 7, 2024, in response to Hurricane Beryl. Consequently, on Monday, July 8, 2024, and Tuesday, July 9, 2024, the storm caused widespread power outages throughout the region. This led to the closure of the City of Baytown's physical offices and the suspension of regular operations for both the public and staff. While essential personnel were engaged in emergency operations only, nonessential personnel did not have access, either electronically or physically, to documents required for the governmental body to meet the deadlines set by the Texas Public Information Act.
