Do you need help cleaning up after a crime? You may be able to get compensation to cover the costs of crime scene clean-up. Here's what you need to know:
Cleaning up after a crime can mean removing stains, odors, broken glass, or other debris left behind. The Crime Victims’ Compensation (CVC) Program might be able to help pay your clean-up costs. Examples of costs that can be covered are:
- Professional cleaning services
- Cleaning supplies
Who Can Get Help?
You may receive compensation if you qualify for the CVC Program and need to pay for crime scene clean-up services.
How Much Can the CVC Program Cover?
The CVC Program will pay up to $2,250 for crime scene clean-up costs for crimes after July 14, 2016. For crimes before this date, different limits may apply.
If more than one person paid for the costs, the money will be split fairly.
How Do I Receive Crime Scene Clean-Up Assistance?
- Apply for the CVC Program: Apply online or by mail. We'll guide you through each step.
- Get Notified of Eligibility: If your application is approved, you'll receive paperwork confirming your claim and explaining the next steps.
- Prepare for Reimbursement: You can choose to clean the scene yourself or hire a licensed crime scene cleanup company. If you clean it yourself, you’ll only be reimbursed for cleaning supplies. If you hire a licensed company, their service costs may also be reimbursed. Just be sure to keep all receipts for cleaning products or services when submitting your request.
- Use Other Available Resources First: By law, the program is a last-resort option. If you qualify for compensation from other sources, like homeowners' or renters' insurance, that must be used before the CVC Program.
- Prepare the Required Documents: To receive payment, have copies of the following ready:
- Bill or receipt for services from a professional cleaning company
- Itemized cost of supplies with an explanation of services rendered
- Homeowners’ or renters' insurance declaration page or statement of no insurance
Submit Your Paperwork: Once you have submitted a CVC application, you can either use the provided form link to upload your documents or mail them directly to us.
