Attor­ney Gen­er­al Pax­ton Announces Agree­ment to Pro­tect Con­sumer Pri­va­cy in RadioShack Case

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton today announced a settlement regarding RadioShack’s proposed sale of its customers’ personally identifiable information in connection with the sale of RadioShack’s trademark and intellectual property. A coalition of 38 states, led by Texas, joined together to oppose the sale of consumer data. Under the terms of the settlement agreement reached after mediation, the overwhelming bulk of RadioShack’s consumer data will be destroyed, and no credit or debit card account numbers, social security numbers, dates of birth or even phone numbers will be transferred.

Attor­ney Gen­er­al Ken Pax­ton Announces $158 Mil­lion Mobile Cram­ming Set­tle­ments with Sprint and Verizon

Attorney General Ken Paxton today announced that the Texas Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division””along with the Attorneys General of the other 49 States and the District of Columbia, and the federal government””reached settlements with Sprint Corporation (“Sprint”) and Cellco Partnership d/b/a Verizon Wireless (“Verizon”) that resolve charges of “mobile cramming” against the companies. The settlements include $158 million in payments, and resolve allegations that Sprint and Verizon placed charges for third-party services on consumers’ mobile telephone bills that were not authorized by the consumers, a practice known as “cramming.”

Attor­ney Gen­er­al Ken Pax­ton Charges Hous­ton-based Diplo­ma Mill” with Fraud

The Texas Attorney General’s Office today filed a lawsuit against a Houston-based learning center for unlawfully marketing and selling fraudulent high school diplomas and transcripts. The state is seeking a temporary restraining order and a hearing in a Harris County district court will be held on Wednesday, April 22.

Texas Attor­ney Gen­er­al Pax­ton Sues Pub­li­ca­tion Renew­al Com­pa­nies for Vio­lat­ing State Con­sumer Pro­tec­tion Law

The Texas Attorney General’s Office today filed an enforcement action against three corporations based in Oregon for misleading Texas consumers into paying for publication subscription renewals the corporations were not authorized to sell. The State’s legal action cites the defendants for violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices ” Consumer Protection Act (DTPA).
