I’ve been a victim of a nonviolent crime. Can the Texas Attorney General’s Office help me?

Being a victim of fraud, scams, or identity theft can be frustrating and overwhelming. If this has happened to you, you are not alone. The Texas Attorney General’s Office (OAG) has informational resources to help guide you through these stressful times and protect yourself in the future.

While the Crime Victims’ Compensation Program helps victims of violent crimes, the Consumer Protection Division at the OAG can take complaints and provide guidance to those who have been affected by nonviolent financial crimes like:

  • Identity theft – Someone has stolen your personal information.
  • Scams & fraud – You lost money to a scam or unfair business practice.
  • Consumer protection issues – A company lied to you or treated you unfairly.
  • Elder financial abuse – You or a loved one is being tricked or pressured into giving money.

The Consumer Protection Division will keep your information in their files to be used to help monitor trends in business practices and determine priorities in their enforcement efforts. In matters of statewide significance, or when substantive evidence indicates that a person or business is engaging in widespread violations of Texas law, the Attorney General may take action on behalf of the collective legal interests of the people of this state. The Consumer Protection Division is an attorney for the state of Texas and cannot take action on your behalf.

Consumer Guidance

The Consumer Protection Division offers guidance on what to do next, including:

  • Filing a complaint – You can report fraud, scams, or unfair business practices.
  • Protecting your identity – Learn how to freeze your credit, report identity theft, and prevent future fraud.
  • Understanding your rights – Texas law protects consumers, and you may have options to get your money back.
  • Learning about scams – Stay informed about the latest fraud tactics so you can avoid them.

Even though nonviolent crimes don’t cause physical harm, they can still be very stressful. You deserve support and help to get back on track. The Texas OAG is here to provide resources you can utilize when impacted by scammers and fraudsters.
